[Food] Taste DAEGU, the 5th story – Puffer Fish Bulgogi

The 5th story of Daegu’s representative foods – Bokeo (Puffer Fish) Bulgogi

Bokeo bulgogi is prepared by peeling blowfish flesh from its bones and grilling it bulgogi style, with bean sprouts and spicy condiments. This dish first appeared 20 years ago in Daegu and was eaten both by frying rice with leftover spices and condiments as a wonderful meal and also as a side dish to alcohol, garnished with blowfish bulgogi. You can also eat it with various kinds of noodles. This dish is currently featured on the menus of most blowfish restaurants in Daegu, and it is perfect for Daegu natives, showcasing a smooth yet spicy taste. Developed by a local restaurant 20 years ago, it was meant to taste spicy to please the local clientele. The restaurant has also used home-grown bean sprouts with a very thin stalk.

This time, we chose to visit the most famous Puffer Fish Bulgogi restaurant ‘Bon-dong Puffer Fish’ located in Dalseo-gu.
The place is almost 19 years old and has put out branches in Seoul.

On the wall Daegu’s proud slogan for city’s 150 selected restaurants says ‘Clean, Polite and Tasty’.

It has huge hall with many tables and private rooms.

They served side dishes which are stir-fried anchovy, beans, watery plain kimchi etc.

The main dish, Puffer Fish Bulgogi, was offered in a big pot covered with fresh sprouts and other vegetables.
It still had to be simmering since the veggies were not done yet.
The price per single-service) is 9,000won (farmed fish or 15,000won (caught at sea).

The sprouts were especially crispy and fresh.

The meat was spicy and tender. Some might feel that it tastes similar to chicken meat.
9-10 pieces were in the pot.

When you are done with the meat, you can add rice in leftover spices and fry.

These are the picture of the dish, restaurant’s chef and his profile.

It has large parking area as well!
