[Press article] The DESC (Daegu English Speaking Club)

The DESC (Daegu English Speaking Club) is conveniently located downtown, in an area full of hip bars and restaurants. The perfect atmosphere for taking a language class, and then, socializing with your new friends afterwards.

Established in 2010, the foremost aim of the DESC was to encourage the learning of the English language in a fun and social way. Now the center offers both Korean and English classes to whoever may want to attend them. More so, the center is a brilliant place to meet new people from around the city, who share the same interests and passions for life in Korea, and more specifically, Daegu.

Regularly holding social events such as, film nights, bowling nights, language exchange parties, and tours around the city, this is a fantastic way to get to know people from outside your usual friendship circle, and create new opportunities for yourself. Not to mention a great chance to practice all the new language skills you have learned in the classroom!

The language classes at DESC are taught purely by volunteers, and have varying ability levels available to suit everyone. Classes are held through out the week according to the following schedule:

Monday, 2pm: High Beginner
Wednesday, 6pm: Beginner, High Beginner
Saturday, 3pm: Beginner, High Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Topics within the classes (according to level), can cover anything from Hangeul and Korean writing skills, to oral conversation, discussions, and debates. As the classes tend to be small in size, many students find it easier to learn as they are able to freely ask questions associated to the topics being taught, or ask for more time to be spent on one particular thing. One on one teaching can also boost confidence in using the new language, which may be a quality some students find lacking when learning in a large classroom environment.

Classes are roughly 90 minutes long, and a monthly fee of 20,000 won is applicable for those attending. However this fee is wavered if attendees are also willing to teach a class in their own language. Exchange teaching is preferred as it encourages the community atmosphere that DESC is all about, and ensures that all students receive lessons from a native speaker. In this case, the monthly fee is waivered.

    1. Could you tell me why do you say 'scam'? :)
This article is from one of foreign press and there's no public endorsement of Daegu city.
We have clear rule that we don't touch anything about foreign press articles.
The view can be different with the city of Daegu.
