For those excited about green farming and green eating, get ready to be super excited about living in Korea! WWOOF CSA has officially launched on January 20th, 2014. Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF), or Willing Workers on Organic Farms, is a loose network of national organisations that facilitate placement of volunteers on organic farms. WWOOF first started England, in Autumn of 1971.
WWOOF Korea has been a chapter of the WWOOF organization since 1996, and started working to introduce wwoofing in Korea to foreign wwoofers and help them to experience real Korean life and culture from 1998. Community Supported Agriculture, CSA for short, works to bridge a relationship between producers and consumers where farmers are able to depend on consumers for a variety of products and the community is able to attain fresh organic produce from responsible and reliable local farmers. Payment for a specific time period is done in advance, this lump sum gives farmers the necessary safety net to successfully grow their crops.and then about every week, a box of fresh in-season produce is sent to the consumer’s doorstep directly from the farm.
According to CSA, the program is competitively priced and more often than not cheaper as it is based on direct dealing with the farmers.
WWOOF CSA falls under the umbrella of WWOOF Korea, but it is a separate organizational entity. CSA products come from specific plots. While there are WWOOF farms across the entire peninsula, including Jeju-do and Ulleung-do, the majority of CSA produce comes from Paldang in the Namyangju region of Gyeonggi-do. Paldang is not only the base of operations but it is also the homefront of the organic movement. Namyangju is also the biggest organic farming district in South Korea.
The website is super easy to navigate! There is even a section for recipe ideas that members have sent in.I signed up a few days ago for the month share. Yesterday, the box was delivered to the Mini Stop at the corner of my block. The kind clerk at the convenience store allowed the package to be delivered there. The box was easy to carry, and was full of wonderful goodies!
