[Living/Press Article] Learning Taekwondo in Daegu

Why not have an immersive cultural experience while you workout? In addition to being a great way to exercise, taekwondo is a form of martial arts native to Korea, so it seems fitting to learn (or continue your education in) it here. With a little bit of hard work and dedication, students can even earn a black belt within a year.

Gym Hae Dong is the only taekwondo gym in Daegu that offers adult only classes. And better still: it is very foreign friendly! The instructor and owner of the gym, Master Hwang, speaks some English as do many of the Korean students. In addition, about six of the 16 adults are foreigners, so there really is no language barrier to worry about.

Students at Gym Hae Dong will gain a wide range of skills. Master Hwang is actually a master of several martial arms forms, and he believes that students should understand the practical usage of taekwondo skills. He frequently incorporates self-defense, as well as other martial arts techniques, into the classes. Also, despite the fact that taekwondo is divided into two different styles (International Taekwondo Federation and World Taekwondo Federation), students learn both at Gym Hae Dong. Everyone is at a different level and belt, and Master Hwang is able to modify the training regiment to fit every student and ability.

The adult classes are twice a day Monday through Friday. The morning class is 11:00am to 12:00pm and the night class is 8:30pm to 10:30pm. Students can stay for the entire two-hour class or for just part of it. At the beginning of class there is always a stretch and warm up routine. After that, the class is run in half hour rotations of various skills. The rotations include strength training, cardio, sparring, self-defense, taekwondo forms, punching, and kicking, and they change everyday.

The membership fee for foreigners is 80,000 won per month, and you may attend as many classes as you want during the week for that price. There is also a 40,000 won joining fee and a 40,000 won uniform fee to start, but one of those fees is waived when you pay for six months in advance, and they are both waived when you pay for a year in advance.   Please see the updated price info below!

If you’re interested in taekwondo, contact Seong-Hee Oh, the English-speaking business manager, at taekwon1991@hanmail.net to schedule your free trial class. Please schedule with her so that Master Hwang can anticipate your arrival. Also, Master Hwang does typically pick new students up from the Daegu Station subway stop at exit 4 for the trial class. So that option is available if you’re interested.

Gym Hae dong is conveniently located close to downtown. It is serviced by many buses as well as the subway. The closest landmarks are Daegu Station subway stop, Citizen Stadium (where the Samsung Lions Baseball team plays), Homeplus Daegu Branch, and the Chilseong E-Mart. The gym is on the 4th floor of the Pruggio apartment building between Daegu Bank and 7/11. The address is 대구광역시 북구 칠성동2 2-2 대우1 푸르지오 오피스텔 407.

If you aren't already on the same side of the road as the Homeplus, cross the street and continue walking straight down that road. You'll pass the Lotteria at the Homeplus and a bike shop right away. Further down, you'll pass a bunch of restaurants and the Daegu Opera House on your left across the street. At the big intersection just after the opera house, you'll see the E-Mart.
