Daegu’s thriving handcrafted art scene was on full display at some of this summer’s most popular outdoor festivals. Local artisans and gathered together to showcase their unique pop-up shops that sold everything from wearable accessories to beautifully crafted home goods.
Jewelry, hand-made clothing, hair accessories, patchwork dolls, paintings, stationery, artisan soaps, jams, jellies, and whimsically potted plants were just a few of the many handcrafted items for sale. Small bouquets of brightly colored flowers were especially popular at the market, with many people snagging a couple of bouquets each. While parents searched for that extra special gift, children flocked to DIY booths to paint, color, draw, and assemble their very own one-of-a-kind craft.
In addition to picking up a few unique gifts, one of my favorite activities at any art market is having our portrait drawn by street artists. We have found all different styles from traditional caricature artists, to pop artists, to artists that create delicate postcard-sized watercolor portraits. They aren’t always the most accurate depiction of us, but we still find the entire process very entertaining. It’s the perfect souvenir to remember a fun day filled with art.
