History of Samgyetang and Restaurant Directory

Due to a geographical reason, Korea has distinctive four seasons: warm spring, hot summer, chilly fall and freezing winter. As a result, ancestors have grown their wisdom and skills to thrive in each season.

In summer, Koreans eat chickens cooked in a special way to treat heat. This dish is called “Samgyetang.” It literally means “Chicken ginseng soup.” Koreans enjoys this dish especially on 3 particular days called Chobok, Jungbok and Malbok. It is collectively called Sambok, known as the hottest days in Korea. Samgyetang is made with a young chicken and stuffed with many healthy ingredients like sticky rice, wolfberry, angelica, ginseng, garlic cloves, garlics, scallions, and so on. Stuff ingredients can vary depending on a region or household.

This combination of foods might sound strange for some of you(I totally understand!) but once you give it a try, you will get to love it. It’s because Samgyetang is not just about tasteful food but it rejuvenates your body and boosts your metabolism. This is why people eat Samgyetang when/before they get tired and lose appetite from heat!

If it boosts your energy, why not during a freezing winter? The fact that Korean enjoys this amazing dish reveals a scientific wisdom. Hot weather makes our body temperature higher over skin but lower in internal organs to cope with heat. Eating a hot dish like samgyetang helps warm up the inside your body. As a result, it energizes your body and helps you regain your appetite. One samgyetang bowl costs about 10,000 – 15,000 won. You’ll see a packed crowd of people at any samgyetang restaurants tomorrow.

Unlike today, the early form of Samgyetang was eaten by rich people in Chosun era(1910-1945). Back then, only rich people could afford chickens so most of people eat different rejuvenating food like Yukgaejang(Spicy Beef Soup with Vegetables). A contemporary style of Samgyetang had started in 1960’s and it’s the iconic summer food. Can you imagine how much wisdom is melted in Daegu Samgyetang, the hottest of the hottest cities in Korea.
