This is the electromagnatic compability testing center.

All the newly made medical devices are tested in this area to examine how much electromagnatic pulse (EMP) are generated during the operation, and the malfunction rate/indurance under EMP distubance.

Electromagnatic Compability test (EMC) is has two separated test phase, Electromagnetic Interference test, and Electromagnetic susceptibility test.

The next destination was Korea Brain Research Institute.

At the front of the Korean Brain Research Institue.

Inside, there was a eye-catching sculpture of scientists, who influenced in the brain scien greatly, standing gracefully.

Sentimentalize over earthenware and pottery made by soil, water, fire and wind.

The exhibition ‘Earthenware and pottery Forms of life made by soil, water, fire and wind’ is held on the 2nd floor of exhibition room at the Modern History Exhibition Hall from Nov. 10 to the end of Feb.
This exhibition features eighty eight pieces of many different types of earthenware and pottery the Daegu Folk History Museum has been collecting for over two decades. Twenty seven pieces of earthenware for the Three Kingdom period and thirty five pieces of celadons and white porcelains for the Goryo and Joseon Dynasty period are on display. Moreover, twenty six pieces of modern pottery produced from modern industrial factories the advanced civilization entered are presented.
These earthenware and pottery are containers(容器) which have been used in everyday living spaces for a long period of time. In case of the mounted dish among earthenware relics of the Three Kingdom period, the one of the Silla Dynasty has holes which do not lead to each other, but those of Gaya Dynasty lead to each other. Even for the shape, the Silla’s one is ladderlike, but on the other hand Gaya’s one is relatively narrow and slender.

Also various patterns or drawings like flower on grayish-blue-powered celadons and white porcelains show a simple, but rich aesthetic sense and sentiment of people of that time. Especially modern pottery discovered while proceeding with the Gyeongsanggamyeong refurbishment project in 2010 are on display for the first time, showing use of pottery drifted from Japan at that time.
In addition to above, big liquor jars and bottles used at the brewery in Bukseong-ro, the busy street of Daegu during Japanese colonial area, are an eye catcher. Of them, chinaware with a phrase ‘Delivery for Patriotism’ are one of materials that show a miserable life of Koreans, which even rice bowls were taken away for Japan’s aggressive war.
In addition, a video that has captured the process of Sagijang(沙器匠, important intangible cultural asset)’s making pottery is screened. As for the earthenware and pottery discovered at the ruins, all processes of organizing and restoring them can be checked through photos, materials and tools. Park In-Hyun, chief of the Art Supporting Division at Daegu Culture & Arts Center, mentioned that ‘we have organized the exhibition in order for visitors to figure out historical changing process and manufacturing processes, etc for containers used for food storage and table setting in a season of harvest. And it will be a golden opportunity to get a general information about the characteristics by history and age for the earthenware and pottery.
Opening hours: 9 AM ~ 6 PM, Every Monday off

Geomdan Fortress, the lost cultural heritage of our town

Geomdan Fortress, the lost cultural heritage of our town

Korea was a city of fortresses from the ancient times. That is why there are fortresses across the country. However, most fortresses have been damaged and only hints of them remain today.

Daegu has many fortresses, but most of them are only known to the academic scholars and have not attracted the attention of the public. Geomdan Fortress is a fortress in northern Daegu and only its approximate boundaries remain today.

Its circumference is 1.8km and it is assumed that it was built by the Silla Empire. It was used as a major defense base along with the nearby Yongam Fortress, Bongmu Fortress, and Palgeo Fortress. It is effective for both defense and operations as it is facing the Geumho River and looks out to all directions.

You will come across a building when you follow the trail of Geomdan Fortress. It is a shrine for Sir Chae Gwi Ha, a literary official and scholar from the Late Goryeo Dynasty, and it was built in 1982. It serves a ritual every first Sunday of April. The doors are locked, so you cannot go inside.

I found many acorns around the fortress. There must be many oak trees. But don't gather them.... Let's leave them for the squirrels.

This is a hiking trail around the fortress. You can follow this trail to look around the fortress. A fortress is very helpful when a war breaks out because it offers many places to hide and wait for an ambush. During the Reinvasion of Japan in 1597, however, the army of Ming Dynasty confronted the invaders at Namwon Castle and was nearly annihilated despite that Joseon had suggested using the fortresses to stop the invaders.

When I looked around the fortress, I thought it would have been very efficient for defending and evacuating the people.

This is a view of Buk-gu and a part of Dong-gu. Most of the spots with good views without any obstacles also served important roles for military purposes. It was important to read the invaders' movements to stay prepared. Geomdan Fortress offers good lookouts while being hidden in the woods, so it must have been great for hiding from the enemies.

This picture is Ondal Fortress in Chungju. It was built by Goguryeo during the Age of Three Empires. I believe Geomdan Fortress once looked like this.

Today, Geomdan Fortress conceals its past stories and provides a shelter for the local people. It was stained by blood in the past, but it is truly quiet and peaceful today. I thought that a space can have different faces from time to time.
