Take a Tour of Daegu’s History at the Daegu National Museum

Take a Tour of Daegu’s History at the Daegu National Museum

The Daegu National Museum (국립대구박물관) houses a small but well-curated collection of national treasures from Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do.  From armor, crowns, jewelry, and royal robes to Buddhist relics and Confucian manuscripts, this gem of a museum beautifully illustrates Daegu’s rich cultural heritage.

Ancient Culture Hall
The Ancient Culture Hall displays items spanning from Prehistoric times to the Three Kingdoms period and provides an opportunity to glimpse into the lives of the early Korean people who settled in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do.  Roughly-made tools and stone daggers date as far back as the Paleolithic era.  Regional artifacts from the Three Kingdoms period include pottery, gilded crowns, and beautiful gold jewelry.  One of the highlights of this room is an intricately detailed tiger-shaped buckle found in nearby Gyeongsan.

Medieval Culture Hall
The next room contains a stunning collection of Buddhist statues and is without a doubt one of the highlights of the Medieval Culture Hall.  Dedicated to Buddhist and Confucian culture, this exhibit features Buddhist art created over the course of several periods and also examines the rise of Confucianism and Confucian schools that became popular in the area.  Don’t miss the exquisite dragon head ornament that once adorned a banner pole outside the entrance of a Buddhist temple.

Textiles and Clothing Hall
From thread to fabric, this exhibition hall tells the story of clothing and highlights the history of Daegu, which rose to prominence as one of Korea’s major cities due to its thriving textile and fashion industry.  Here you can find outstanding examples of traditional Korean hanboks, including ornate hand-made royal and wedding robes.

While these three halls contain the museum’s permanent exhibits, there are also several galleries dedicated to special exhibitions, an auditorium, a children’s library, a Korean culture activity room, a lecture hall, a history exploration room, as well as activities for children.  The exhibits continue outside the walls of the building with an outdoor relic park, an earthenware kiln gallery, and plenty of easy trails to explore the museum’s lovely park setting.

Most of the exhibits have translations in English as well as Chinese and Japanese.  Guided tours of the permanent exhibits are also offered in English.  Consult the Daegu National Museum’s website for more details.
