Week in history : Poet of resistance and National Debt Redemption Movement of Daegu, Korea Through Great names' Hanok(Korean Old house).

Visiting HANOK
Meaningful history of Daegu

With the special day of 2.28 soon approaching, Min Hee and her family set out to learn a bit more about the history of Korea’s Democracy Movement. Last month we visited the Democracy Movement Hall near Myeongdeok Station. We were really surprised that so many high school students were involved in the movement here in Daegu and around the country. We were a little interested in that fact when, last year Min Hee and her dad, we were able to view Adam’s Basement as part of a special stamp tour event. So this time we go to visit Hanok(Korean old house) to see old houses and historical traces.

 ■ House of Lee Sang Hwa

Lee Sang Hwa is a famous Korean poet who lived from 1901 until 1943, was born in Daegu. He was a teacher of French and English. He is most famous for his poetry. He raised awareness of the life Koreans were subjected to under Japanese rule.

In his house turned museum there we can see the basic conditions he lived in. Now come a meeting point of past and present. There are several interactive components of the museum. Maybe the most popular is pictured above. There are costumes from the time of Lee Sang Hwa’s life. Guests are invited to dress up and take photos. There is even a simple way to use the on-site camera and email the photo to yourself or others.

There are a few other interactive displays. Min Hee has always been interested in the music and songs of the time. There is actually a version of “Oh My Darling”. There are also old photos and artwork on display.

There is a sign-in book for visitors and there are brochures available in English and Korean. The brochures explain some facts of Mr. Lee’s life and have the titles of several of his poems.

Again, here is another interactive display with tests for visitors to take. This is something fun and educational. Min Hee sometimes asks if the other visitors are from Daegu. It is always nice to see so many people visiting and on occasion we here people speaking in different languages. These areas downtown seem to be popular with those of us from Daegu as well as people from out of town.

■ House of Seo Sang Don

Seo Sang Don lived from 1850 until 1913. In his early days he worked hard and early in his life he became very successful both financially and as a prominent member of society. His family was not treated well because they were members of the Catholic Church. Once he became successful he used his money towards mission work and in support of the Catholic Church. He also played an important role in attempt to raise money for the proposed National Debt Repayment Movement and awareness of social issues and education.

“Mommy, how many people lived here?”
“I do not know. Long ago big families lived in small houses.”
“Where is the TV?”
“There were no TVs a long time ago.”
“Oh no!”

“Daddy why is everything so small?”
“A long time ago people didn’t have many clothes and other things.”
“Why not, daddy?”
“People had simpler lives.  No stress about new toys or new phones baby girl.”
“Wow, that is interesting.”

“Mommy, what is this room?”
“It is the kitchen.”
“Uh oh, no refrigerator in there!”

The timeline is explained in the brochures available on site. Seo Sang Dan led an interesting life and he tried to improve the lives of people in Daegu as well as the country. He played an important role in Korean History. Some of his lessons are still practiced today.

Found things to eat in Daegu's New Shinsegae Mall - Daegu Munchies, dining, snacks, sweets, desserts and more!

What to Eat at
Daegu's New Shinsegae Mall

The new Shinsegae mall is a welcome addition to Daegu’s restaurant scene with the addition of an expansive and delicious selection of Korean and global cuisine.  Wait in line for trendy Japanese cheese tarts at Bake, grab a burger at Johnny Rockets, enjoy American Chinese food at P.F. Chang’s, or simply grab a cup of artisan coffee and take in the view from the top floors.

While you can find food stalls and cafés interspersed throughout Shinesegae mall, the main concentration of restaurants can be found on three floors: the basement level (B1F), the eighth floor (Luang Street Food Court), and on the ninth floor (Zooraji Theme Park).

Like most major department stores and malls in Korea, the basement of Shinsegae is one of the best places to find a wide variety of inexpensive cuisines.  You can even order your meals from the automated “food bar!”  In contrast, Luang Street Food Court is where you’ll find some of the nicer, sit-down restaurants.  As the name implies, the entire floor is designed to make it feel as if you are walking along a dimly lit street lined with charming bistros.  On the theme park level, the shops are whimsical and child-friendly, with vendors selling fresh-spun cotton candy and fill-your-own jars of candy.

Below are just some of the restaurants you can find at Shinsegae. Happy eating!
