Wait a minute! There's something special this year.

The event scene & performances will be shown on the large screen in front of the Grand Bell to make it easy for anyone to see the various events before the ceremony.
And thanks to the 'variable stage', the large screen on it will be divided into two sides to show the grandeur of the Dalgubeol Grand Bell when the ceremony starts in earnest.

I'm sure you will have a memorable experience if you join this event. Let's enjoy it together!

Kimchi Jjigae: Cooking and Tasting Kimchi Stew in Your Style

Cooking and Tasting Kimchi Stew in Your Style

Kimchi is considered a staple food in Korean cuisine; it’s appeared in almost the meal of the household. There are thousand ways to enjoy this delicious food, you can eat directly or used it as an ingredient in many dishes. Kimchi stew, also known as Kimchi Jjigae is the most common way to enjoy the best taste of aged Kimchi. And it is my best Korean stew as well. LoL. They will be more grateful to you if you cook yourself and serve your family. Believe me, it’s very easy to cook. Every household has their own secrets for making their Kimchi jjigae, and here is my secret:

INGREDIENTS
1 pound fresh bacon or pork belly (personally, I like bacon), cut into 1/2-inch pieces
            5 garlic cloves, minced
            1 tablespoon grated ginger
            2 tablespoons soy sauce
            Vegetable oil
2 cups kimchi, aged if possible, squeezed dry and chopped
3 tablespoons Korean hot pepper paste (gochujang) (optional), if you like more spiciy flavor
1 tablespoon Korean hot pepper flakes (gochugaru) (optional), if you like more spiciy flavor
            1 cup kimchi juice
8 cups water (for a richer stew, use chicken, pork or beef broth)
8 ounces soft or silken tofu, sliced into small cubes
8 scallions or Korean chives, chopped, for garnish (optional)

PREPARATION

1.          Put bacon in a bowl. Add garlic, ginger, soy sauce. Toss well to coat and let marinate for 10 minutes.

2.          Set a heavy-bottomed stew pot over medium heat. Pour some vegetable oil, then add bacon mixture and let it cook gently for 5 minutes. Add onion, then cook and stir until softened, for about 5 minutes. Turn heat to medium high and add kimchi, gochujang and gochugaru. Let the mixture simmer for 2 minutes.

3.          Add kimchi juice and water (or broth, if using) and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cook at a brisk simmer for another 20 minutes. Taste broth and adjust seasoning.

Add the kimchi juice, water, gochujang, and doengjang, stirring everything together to combine.

4.          Before serving, add tofu and stir gently to combine. When tofu is heated through, ladle into bowls and garnish with scallions (if you like).

5.          Finish!!! Now, it’s time to serve yourself with the greatest stew and a bowl of rice. These are my staple foods during the winter in Korea. LoL.

I did it, what about you? If you have any other delicious and simple Korean food recipes, please share with me.

Sincheon Ice Skating Rink | Have Fun this Winter

Have Fun this Winter at Sincheon Ice Skating Rink

What do you usually do during winter? Many of us prefer to stay indoors during the cold winter days. There are also others who prefer to beat the cold weather by doing something fun such as skiing, skating and sledding.
Speaking of skating and sledding, do you know that the Sincheon River Skating Rink started operating. It started operating on December 8, 2018.

My husband and I went there on its opening day.
We were surprised to see many people especially families with children even though it was just the first day.

Sincheon River Skating Rink is located along Sincheon River near Debec Department Store and Daebonggyo Station.

It is so easy to get there. All you have to do is take the Daegu Monorail to Debonggyo Station (Line 3).
Once at Daebonggyo Station, head towards Exit 4, cross the street and turn left. You'll see the skating rink on your right. It is very easy to find because of the colorful banners along the way.

Once you are there, pay the admission fee which is 1,000 won for an hour and 3,000 won for a whole day.

When we visited on the first day, we did not pay anything because admission fee was free from the first day until the third day, December 11th.
Upon entering the main gate, look to your left. You will see the time table as well as a sign pointing towards the rental area for skates and helmets.

There are two rental areas. The first one you will come across is for sizes 170~230(mm). The second one is for sizes 240~270(mm) and above. There are also lockers where you can keep your belongs. Make sure to have 500 won coin with you if you want to use the locker.

Skates? Check. Helmet? Check. Gloves? Check. Now, you are ready to hit the ice!

Keep safe and enjoy your day!
Here are some photos of my husband having a great time at the skating rink.

Aside from the skating rink, there is also an ice sledding are for kids.

If you get hungry or tired, there's also a rest area and a store inside.

Though this places is not that big, it is big enough to make one have a good time. So if you are in Daegu and looking for a place to go and have fun on ice, consider going to Sincheon Ice Skating Rink.

Winter Break Activities – Daegu Fun around the Town

Winter Break Activities – Daegu Fun around the Town

Are you getting cabin fever from staying at home too many days in a row? Listed are 5 ideas for things to do outside of your house.

1.          Legend Heroes – Daegu, (Screen Sports & Arcade) in Novotel Business Park Building, Level B2, 11-1, Seongnae 1(il)-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu
2.          Cherry Tomato, (Indoor Playground & Café) 19-18 Sang-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu
3.          Nakdonggang (river) Victory Memorial Hall, (War Museum) in Apsan Park, 574-116 Apsansunhwan-ro, Bongdeok-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu
4.          Nam-gu Yicheon-dong Theme Street Development Project dedicated to Artist In-Sung Lee, (Outdoor Mural Street), 308-9 Icheon-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu
5.          Pungguk Myeon, (Noodle Restaurant) at the top end of the Apsan Cable Car, 454 Apsansunhwan-ro, Nam-gu, Daegu

1. Legends Heroes - Daegu

GRAND OPENING signs are greatly anticipated events in Daegu. One such sign has been sighted on the Novotel Building for a couple of months now. LEGEND HEROES Daegu (concept first opened in Seoul) is a unique screen sports & arcade facility projected to open to the public on Christmas Eve, 24 December, 2018. I did get a sneak peak while they were loading the software into the game kiosks, and it really looks like a lot of fun!

Game Kiosks available: Candy Slash Action Racing, Sling Shot, Pitching, Archery, Shooting Clay, Shooting FPS, Fishing, Skiing, Curling, Ping Pong, Soccer, Basketball, and Pinball.

The price chart had not yet been posted, but for comparison – Seoul facility charges 16,000 won for 1.5 hours, 19,000 won for 2 hours, and 25,000 won for all day access. There are charges for exceeding the purchased playtime. A game card will be issued to track your time purchase and kiosk bookings. Hours were not posted either…let’s just anticipate 11 am – midnight daily.

Was that a CURLING STONE?!? Yes!!! We are so there!!! Be patient as they work the bugs out of their systems. If they are successful at this small location, expect larger facilities in Daegu to open up. Come support the new things to do in Daegu, but more importantly have some new fun!

Access is by elevator only from the Business Park main entrance, so expect this facility to get crowded quickly with lots of wait time at each kiosk during prime downtown party hours. There are no food or drinks sold at this facility.

2. Cherry Tomato

Families have an amazing gem with this immaculate indoor playground and café tucked into a warehouse area off of the Yellow Line (Hwanggeum Monorail Station). Daily hours are 1030 am – 9 pm (closed Mondays). Expect to see Santa between 2 pm – 4 pm this year!! Limited parking.

3. Nakdonggang (river) Victory Memorial Hall

This free museum is ideal to visit during the cold months as a momentary refuge from the Apsan Mountain chill if needed. Open daily 10 am – 5 pm.

There are two levels to the facility telling the story of Daegu’s significance during the Korean War.

4. Nam-gu Yicheon-dong Theme Street Development Project dedicated to Artist In-Sung Lee

Right outside the Pedestrian Gate of Camp Henry is a recently developed mural street honoring Daegu born artist In-Sung Lee (1912-1950). He painted during the Japanese colonial rule in the 1930’s.

Lee introduced Western painting to the art scene of his time being considered a “genius painter” at the young age of 18. He painted up until his untimely death of accidentally being shot dead by a police officer as he headed home drunk during curfew. He was only 39.

5. Pungguk Myeon

A popular sunset date night location for young couples, the top end of the Apsan Park Cable Car now offers a freshly renovated romantic setting to share delicious noodle soups. Refer to Cable Car Hours for ideal dining hours. Getting stuck at the top of the mountain after dark might make for an awkward hike down if not intentional!

It is good to relax during the Winter Break, but when you need a break from being at home – or at least a change of scenery, go exploring into your Daegu!
